Two Prefects Make Perfect

By Brooke Thaler, Publications Teacher

There are always changes to any school when a new year begins. This year at Wooster, one significant change has been the continued expansion of our Prefect positions -- most notably, adding a second Senior Prefect. As the Upper School continues to grow to just over 200 students, so too have the needs and opportunities for more leadership roles. This year’s two Senior Prefects, Simon Felicione and Julia Bauer, are looking forward to sharing this role.

Julia explains the division of their roles as: “Simon will be overseeing the traditional Jobs Program, whereas I will be leading our non-traditional Prefects, who are involved in helping to organize our chapel program, environmental efforts, student life, student ambassador program, equity and inclusion work, and the Center for Social Impact. I feel as though having one Senior Prefect heading both the aforementioned initiatives as well as the Jobs Program can be overwhelming, which is why I believe it is a wonderful idea to split the role into two parts.”

While there are still East, West, and Central Campus Prefects, the roles that Julia describes are also relatively new ones that have come along in recent years.

“The Prefect program has grown in accordance with the student body, allowing there to be greater opportunity for students to act as leaders. It is nice that there is a wider variety of options to be a Prefect around campus to suit the interests and passions of individual members of the senior class,” she says.

Both Senior Prefects are looking forward to their new roles as we kick off the year.

“I am looking forward to a lot as Senior Prefect,” says Simon. “I am excited to make Wooster be the best it can be. Also, I cannot wait to work closer with the jobs program, to understand its innerworkings and roots.”

“I am greatly anticipating working with all of the other non-traditional Prefects to see what sort of positive impact we can leave on Wooster as a class. Being the first Senior Prefect of student life is particularly exciting, since it is largely up to me to interpret the role for myself in the coming months,” adds Julia.
