A Century Built on Purpose

The foundational elements of Wooster School's ethos have remained relevant and strong throughout the last century, and as strong today as ever. Beginning October 2, 2026, join us on campus for a landmark Homecoming Weekend, a Centennial Gala, and a yearlong series of events honoring our school's past, present, and future.

Rev. Dr. Aaron C. Coburn

In the fall of 1926, Rev. Dr. Aaron C. Coburn opened the doors of Wooster School with just ten students and a conviction that education could be different. An education could be more purposeful, more personal, more rooted in character. What began as a modest boys' school on the grounds of a Connecticut church became something far greater. The school became a community defined by four enduring principles: simplicity, hard work, intellectual excellence, and service to others.

Those principles were not abstract ideals. They were lived. Students maintained the campus with their own hands, worshipped together, and were held to an Honor Code that made integrity as central as academics. The school named for a Revolutionary War general carried his spirit into every generation. A spirit not of conquest, but of conscience.

Over the decades, Wooster School grew and changed. Girls joined the community in 1970. The school transitioned from boarding to day in 1990. The campus expanded to 127 acres and 325 students drawn from across Fairfield and Westchester Counties. And yet, through every chapter, the founding mission held: to educate the whole person — mind, character, and community.

Today, as we mark 100 years, we do not simply look back. We look at who our students are becoming — curious, compassionate, and ready to lead — and we recognize that the work Dr. Coburn began on this campus is far from finished. The next century starts now.
