Wooster Hosts its First Track Meet

On Wednesday, April 22, Wooster hosted its first-ever track meet at DHS’s track from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., including relays, running, and additional field events. The event was originally scheduled in March and set up by Wooster’s Track and Field coaches, Mrs. Wilkinson and Ms. Carlson.

Harvey and Westover competed alongside Wooster’s track team in this meet.

The events at the meet were all distance and sprinting events featured at NEPSTA. There were additional field events, including jumping and throwing, and the only event excluded was the hurdles.

Wooster’s track team covered the majority of events with a surplus of students eager to run the 100 and 200-meter sprints, and our distance runners prepared to cover longer treks such as the 800, 1600, and 3k races. As for the field events this year, new coach Chris Torres has been at practices to aid our throwers in technique, helping them to reach personal records (PRs). This included Will ’29 in discus, javelin and shot put, Beaudan ’27 in the shot put, Leo ’28 in javelin, and Ale ’26 in javelin.

“Anytime you do something new, there will be challenges to face as you work out the wrinkles,” Mrs. Wilkinson said.

There are complications in hosting such a large event: coordinating transportation of students, managing equipment, hiring officials for timing, and organizing volunteers to manage simultaneous events in an off-site facility.

“Luckily, we have lots of support from the other coaches and teams who put time into helping this meet succeed,” she added.

Both coaches were excited for the camaraderie of the team, cheering everyone on as they tried to reach personal bests. There were not only runner’s PR’s to look forward to, but the additional possibility of making this an annual event in the future.

“Our hope is that going forward, the HVAL teams will combine to co-host this meet as an HVAL invitational,” Mrs. Wilkinson and Ms. Carlson said.

There were sponsors who helped run this meet, such as Danbury High for renting the track and Fulton Accurate Timing for Timing the meet. Yet, such efforts would not be possible without all the help provided by Harvey individuals officiating events, parent volunteers dedicating their time to help out, and most importantly, our coaches, Mrs. Wilkinson and Ms. Carlson, for their commitment to organizing such a meet.
