On Wednesday, April 29, the Wooster GirlUp Club organized Denim Day, where everyone on campus wore blue jeans to show support for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence.
This day comes from a court case in Italy when a girl's case was ignored because what she was wearing, jeans, were considered “inappropriate.” Today, we show our support to all survivors by wearing jeans on Denim Day.
Denim day at Wooster has been an ongoing tradition for many years and has been led by the leaders of GirlUp every year. Kathryn ’26 has been a part of GirlUp ever since her freshman year at Wooster and became a leader her junior year.
To her, “denim day is a day where we show solidarity to women who experience sexual assault and domestic violence.”
According to Kathryn, this year's denim day was a huge success!
“There were so many signatures on the jeans and everyone did a good job about bringing awareness to the day,” she said.
Ella ’26, who is also a club leader, has been inspired by Denim Day ever since her freshman year.
“I saw how the club leaders organized and led Denim Day, and I was so inspired that the following year I painted my own jeans for Denim Day with inspiring messages and quotes for survivors,” she said.
The GirlUp Club is a big club filled with people who want to help spread awareness around Wooster. The club supervisor, Ms. Carlson, thinks that it is very important to hold events like these in schools because it is not talked about a lot, and almost half the women in the U.S. are affected by this. Ella saw how club leaders during her freshman year organized the day and brought awareness to the school, and she wanted to do the same.
Katie ’27, who will take over as the girl up leader next year, mentioned how bringing attention to this day is important, especially at schools, since it's not talked about that much.
“I have always been an advocate for women’s rights and for continuing my knowledge of gender equality, and the issues affecting women globally,” she said. “Even if my impact with Girl Up at Wooster is small, I aim to raise awareness, support the community, and educate others.”
Overall, everyone who is part of GirlUp has a goal to bring awareness and make a difference, and by hosting a day like this at Wooster, everyone here was able to learn a little bit more about Denim Day.
