After years of falling short against our biggest rival, Harvey School, Wooster Girls Varsity Tennis has flipped the script, claiming victory for the last two straight seasons. Last year, we lost our first match to Harvey 3-4. However, this all changed on May 1, 2025, with a 4-3 win. This was a huge breakthrough moment for the girls’ tennis team.
The Girls Varsity Tennis team has been rebuilding and getting stronger every year. This year, with six graduating seniors, we were able to defeat Harvey again last Wednesday, April 22, (6-1) with just a loss at 4th singles.
However, these wins did not come easily, to say the least. The tennis team took pretty dramatic losses in 2015 and 2016, with a 0-7 and a 1-6 loss. The team slightly improved with more wins within the seven games, but never enough to beat Harvey.
From 2022 to 2024, the tennis teams came very close to winning but ended up falling short, with Harvey winning 4-3 or 5-2. In the 2024-2025 season, everyone on the tennis team had a goal of working hard and trying to win HVALs. After early in the season, we played Harvey and lost 2-5, so our team went to every practice eager to improve and win. The next time we played, we beat them! Our team has gone uphill from here. We came so close to winning HVALs, but unfortunately lost to Westover in the finals.
This year, we have a 3-0 winning streak within our league, and we are ready to win HVALs for the first time since 2015. We know we really want to win, and the rest of our team does as well. We have improved so much over the last four years, and down below is a chart of our matches against Harvey! We know the tennis team plans to keep this winning streak against Harvey going and never return to them beating us.
