The girls’ tennis season is off to a great start. They currently are 3-1 with wins against Cheshire, Forman, and Storm King. The players have been working hard in practice, building skills and strengthening bonds. The team recognizes that their relationships with teammates and improvement in skills are just as, if not more, important than winning matches. The coach of the team, Adam Moskowitz, stresses the importance of finding smaller wins within a match. Although the team is very strong and has a shot at winning HVALS this season, he wants them to remember that winning is not the most important part of the game.
“HVALs aren't the goal,” Coach Adam said. “That's A scoreboard, not THE scorecard. I want growth as defined by trusting oneself and one's teammates to be able to go out there and compete and deal with what comes your way.”
Adam’s main goal for the season isn’t to win HVALS; it is for team members to trust in themselves. Tennis is a tough game mentally, so players need to come on to the court with a strong mindset.
“So much of tennis is trusting your game and your skill, then playing to win, not the opposite, which is playing to not lose,” Coach Adam said.
Although the season has just begun, it is already clear that the team is very resilient. Players have been able to turn bad scores into unexpected wins through their mental strength.
“They've each managed to figure out how to work with what they have on any given day and to see how far that can take them,” Adam said. “They might not always win, but they'll keep trying.”
As the season goes on, Adam wants to see the players work on playing as they practice and practice how they want to play. Confidence is a huge part of tennis and is something that the players are working to build on the court. So far, the girls' tennis team is set up to have a great season and a shot at winning HVALs.
