Although championship wins often define a sports season, they do not entirely define the range of successes that come with it. Wooster athletes compete in the Housatonic Valley Athletic League (HVAL), a league consisting of independent preparatory schools in New York and Connecticut, bringing teams together for competition.
This season, boys lacrosse, girls lacrosse, baseball, girls tennis and boys tennis all advanced into the finals, with boys tennis ultimately winning the HVAL championships title. Many important themes emerged across the sports program: resilience, determination, teamwork, chemistry and growth.
These themes were evident in the boys lacrosse season, representing significant advancements from previous years.
“I’m so proud of us going undefeated in HVALs,” shared Yiorgos ’27, a captain of the team. “In my career at Wooster, I have never accomplished that, so it was a big achievement.”
After strengthening returning talent and introducing new valuable players to the atmosphere of the team, they developed greater depth, which was missing in years prior. Their league season was undefeated before a devastating loss in the finals against The Williams School, 5-9. The depth in the boys lacrosse team made a noticeable difference this season. Players shared that fatigue has been an ongoing issue, resulting in players getting burnt out quickly or becoming more prone to injuries. Since the team was able to rely on a larger, skilled group of players, it allowed them to play strongly for the entire game, never slacking and giving everyone a moment to showcase their talent.
Girls Varsity Lacrosse also made it to the finals, beating Christian Heritage School 18-3 in the semi-finals, showing a shift in mentality and a positive outlook at the end of the season.
“We had a different attitude where we truly wanted to play and wanted to win,” said captain Lucy ’27.
Despite a few tough losses and injuries, spirits remained high, carrying them to the finals. Unfortunately, they lost the championship game to The Williams School by only two goals, making the final score 8-10.
In addition to the team's resilience, the team's wide range of talent played a major role in their success. There were skilled players across the roster, constantly contributing to all different positions and always putting their best foot forward. Like the boys, the girls’ team also had depth, having players of all skill levels able to step up and learn throughout the season.
Baseball added another strong season to Wooster athletics, battling adversity and building strong connections with each other, creating a strong foundation for their successful season.
“What made our team so successful throughout the season was the chemistry we had both on and off the field,” said Drew ’26. “Everyone trusted and played for each other.”
They beat the Forman School in the semi-finals, 11-10, advancing them to the finals, where they then lost to the Harvey School, 9-8.
Although they lost, the team's determination and ability to stay connected through every hard challenge highlighted their growth as a team and as individuals this season.
On the courts, Girls Varsity Tennis found major success both individually and collaboratively. The team made it all the way to HVAL finals while delivering impressive performances from Emily ’28, who secured the singles title, and Kendall ’26 and Kathryn ’26, who won the title for the doubles championship.
“We have a lot of strength in both the singles and doubles lineups,” said Kathryn. “Having great players in both sections of the lineup and our determination allowed us to have great results.”
While every Wooster team had successful HVAL journeys, Boys Varsity Tennis ended its league season with an HVAL championship title. Blake ’26 also won singles and Davis ’27 and Henry ’28 won doubles.
Their path towards winning HVALs was not simply based on perfection, but learning and growing from the difficult moments the season threw at them.
“There is no better teacher than a loss,” said tennis coach, Mr. Sacco
One moment that further shaped the trajectory of their season was an early loss to the Christian Heritage School. Instead of allowing this defeat to have a negative impact on their season, it helped them regain focus, ultimately powering a stronger response in the rematch, where Wooster then won 5-2, setting the stage and re-flourishing their confidence before HVALs.
Mr. Sacco emphasized the team's importance of shifting their mindset away from the results and towards their effort, focus and attitude, which they had greater control over. This allowed them to be prepared for high-pressure situations.
Davis ’27, a team captain, also highlighted the significance of being resilient and having strong team chemistry.
“Though we had many setbacks due to injuries, we didn’t let that stop us,” said Davis. “We all got along super well and were always there for each other, no matter the situation.”
The team's motivation carried far beyond their performance on the court. They competed for their injured teammate Luke and the drive to finish the seniors tennis career with a championship win.
While boys’ tennis took home the HVAL title, Wooster’s spring sports season had a larger meaning than a championship. Across every sport, the athletes showed determination and commitment to one another, showcasing the strengths of Wooster athletics beyond a title.
