Last Wednesday, students, parents, faculty and staff participated in a school-wide blood drive, aimed at helping local hospitals and patients in need. Throughout the day, volunteers and donors worked together to support a cause that can directly save lives. The event also gave students the opportunity to learn more about the importance of blood donation and how one simple action can have a major impact on others.
Organizers Lil, Gwen and Hannah shared that donating blood is a quick and safe process that usually takes about 15 minutes. Donors only give one pint of blood, but that single donation can help save up to three lives. To make the experience comfortable, music was played during the event, and snacks were provided afterward for everyone who donated.
The Medical Club later thanked everyone who participated in the drive and shared that 29 donors took part, with 79% donating for the first time. By the end of the event, 23 units of blood had been collected. According to the American Red Cross, that amount of donated blood could potentially help save up to 69 lives!
Lil, lead student organizer of the blood drive, said the event felt especially meaningful because of her own family’s experiences with blood transfusions. She explained that her grandfather relies on them regularly.
“He needs blood transfusions a lot, like once a month,” said Lil. “If he didn’t have any blood or enough to do it, then he probably wouldn’t live.”
Lil also explained that blood is constantly needed for surgeries, accidents, cancer treatments, and emergencies.
The blood drive highlighted how students can make a difference in their communities even through small actions. By donating blood or volunteering at the event, members of the Wooster community were able to support hospitals and patients who rely on donations every day. Encouraging students to become more aware of how they can help others in meaningful ways.
