The girls athlete spotlight goes to Rayssa ‘28. Rayssa started her Wooster lacrosse career just last year as a freshman. As a freshman, Rayssa played attack and quickly became a vital member of the team. However, this season, Rayssa started every game in the midfield. In the final two games of the season, the HVAL Semi-finals and the HVAL Championship game, Rayssa scored 6 goals.
“Our middies read each other really well, and that is one of our strengths as a team,” Assistant Coach Ms. Newman said. Rayssa is key to that midfield success. Whether she takes the draw or comes up with a ground ball off the circle, she never fails to support her teammates, all over the field.
Off the field, Rayssa is a “very focused person who makes an effort to mentor younger girls,” highlighted Ms. Newman. These skills aid her in being the best she can be on the lacrosse field. Rayssa never fails to try new things, like a left-handed goal against Storm King.
Looking ahead, the team can’t wait to see what Rayssa will accomplish in the future on and off the field!
The boys athlete spotlight goes to Blake ‘26. Blake has had an impressive career on the Boys Varsity Tennis team, first joining in 8th grade. His game has developed over the years, with the most growth in his sophomore year, when he really improved his accuracy and power.
Blake ended his career as the winningest player in Wooster history, with a final record of 44-18, and went undefeated in HVALs this year. He is a 4-time HVAL team tournament winner, and in 3 years of the individual HVAL tournament, he has won twice, with the only loss coming from teammate Teddy Porter ‘25.
“He would be someone who I would put into the Wooster Hall of Fame pretty easily,” Mr. Sacco said. “He is very coachable and irreplaceable."
Blake has been a mentor for the younger players on the team and always leads by example.
“He is really good at motivating the whole team and pushing them to take the extra step or go the extra mile,” Ian ‘28 said. “He is a really well-rounded tennis player, and pushes us to get better.”
