On a summer weekend, when movie theaters are usually packed, a nearly empty cinema showed just how much the moviegoing experience has changed. Only three people sat in the audience, as Chase ’29 watched the supposedly popular “F1: The Movie” at a nearby theater.
When was the last time you went to a movie theater instead of watching a movie at home? Movie theaters have been struggling for a few years now because of a combination of factors. Some say it was COVID-19, others say streaming services and convenience, and it's likely all of those things.
In 2024, AMC made 15% less revenue than in 2019, and its stock price is down 99.5% since its high in 2019. AMC is the largest movie theater chain in the world, with well over 1,000 locations and 11,000 screens. One theory on why this is happening is the rise of streaming. With websites like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and many others, it is much more convenient to pay $20 a month and get access to many movies and shows instead of just one at the theater. You can also stay at home instead of driving to a theater. Some viewers agree that convenience is the main reason they avoid theaters.
“I rarely go to movie theaters unless it’s playing a movie I’ve been waiting for,” said Judah ‘26. “I definitely prefer streaming, just because it is so accessible — all you have to do is turn the TV on.”
Even though paying for multiple services adds up, it is still usually cheaper than paying for snacks and tickets every time you want to watch a movie on the big screen. Rising ticket and snack prices have also discouraged some viewers.
Chase ’29 noticed the difference, and it has impacted the frequency of his trips to the movie theater.
Streaming services' convenience and affordability weren’t the only reasons for the waning popularity of theaters. There are many more reasons for this. Because of the pandemic, no one could go to theaters, and financially, it was impossible to make it work, especially for smaller businesses, causing many to close. Another reason is that before 2020, theaters could still thrive despite streaming’s existence because they were the first to get rights to show the movie. But now, many production companies are opting to give streaming services the rights at the same time as releasing to the theaters or just not releasing in theaters at all.
It isn’t all bad for movie theaters, though. Many people still go to theaters for the experience and social aspect. The movie theaters have always been a very popular place for friends to hang out or for dates. This is one area where streaming services can’t beat theaters. Even those who prefer streaming still see value in theaters. Judah said the experience of going with family or friends makes it worthwhile.
“It’s a place to unwind and follow the emotions on the big screen,” he said. “I think it’s a pretty important part of culture.”
Another feature of theaters that won’t be outmatched is their experience. From large screens and dimmed lights to leather recliners, movie theaters have maintained their charm and often attract viewers because of their comfort rather than the movie itself. Theaters also bring in a lot of people when there is a trend. For example, Barbenheimer or wearing suits to the Minion movie brought many more people to the movies, making social media a powerful ally of theaters.
Movie theaters may be struggling, but there is still hope for them. They have faced many challenges, from global pandemics to new ways of watching movies; however, their advantages remain in social interaction and a premium experience.
