Every spring, high school theatre students across Connecticut gather in Waterbury for the Halo Awards, hosted by the Seven Angels Theatre. The event is a celebration of student theatre and recognizes outstanding performances and productions from schools around the state. This year, our school had a lot to celebrate. Wooster’s theatre department took on two productions this season: the fall play Sometimes the Rain, Sometimes the Sea and the winter musical Urinetown. Between these two incredible shows, we earned a total of 16 Halo nominations. For the first time ever, both productions were nominated in their respective “Best Play” and “Best Musical” categories, a milestone moment for the department.
At the ceremony, we even had the honor of performing “Privilege to Pee” from Urinetown in front of a packed house of fellow theatre enthusiasts. It was a thrilling performance that captured the spirit of our cast and the creativity of our program. By the end of the night, we returned home with three well-deserved awards. Marley Dixon won for her standout comedic performance in Sometimes the Rain, Sometimes the Sea, Amelie Simard took home the prestigious award for Best Female Actor in a Play, and Andy Marvin was recognized with the “Up and Coming” award, a testament to his rising talent as a freshman. Additionally, Grayson Aspen, who played the male lead in Urinetown, was nominated for Best Actor. While he didn’t take home the award, he shared this heartfelt reflection; “I was honored to be nominated, and despite the outcome, we had so much fun and were so proud of the show that we put on.”
Beyond the awards and accolades, the night was a celebration of hard work, friendship, and artistic expression. It was also a chance to witness the incredible talent coming out of schools across Connecticut. Whether we were cheering on our peers, performing on stage, or soaking in the moment, it was a night none of us will forget. Congratulations to everyone involved, you made Wooster proud!
