Wooster Faculty/Staff Fantasy Football: The Conclusion

Wooster Faculty/Staff Fantasy Football: The Conclusion

My Experience Writing WFSFFL Articles:

I started writing these articles in the Fall of 2022, my Sophomore year. At the time, I didn’t have any idea what to write about, so when Ms. Thaler mentioned that she was looking for someone to write about this fantasy football league. I slowly raised my hand not knowing what I was getting into.

From the start, I knew that I wasn’t going to just give a brief outline of what happened each week, I wanted to do something that would increase excitement and keep readers entertained. Taking jabs at my teachers and the head of school was the answer I came to. Every Friday I get emails from teachers in the league trying to justify decisions or talk about the words I said about their team. Soon enough, this league turned into a community. Teachers got more competitive, and my articles incorporated more and more insults.

Despite it being very time consuming to write as much as I did, I started enjoying the connections that I was making from this series. Thanks to the WFSFFL, I was able to befriend faculty despite never taking one of their classes. Mr. Lingenheld and I always stop to talk about football, and he always likes to mention the fact that I am a Giants fan. I was also able to befriend Mr. Byrnes, and I can now go up to him and make fun of the Jets. I have nothing but gratitude for everything the WFSFFL has given me. Thank you everyone for reading these articles and Ms. Thaler for letting me do this in the first place. Next year you will see another fellow Journalism student in replace of me…

Interview with Mr. Carone/Speed Rules

For the past three years Mr. Carone has been asking for an interview week after week. In my last article for the WFSFFL, I knew that I had to find a way to incorporate him in…

Q: Mr. Carone, you have been asking for an interview for the past 3 years, what inclined you to want this?
A: I feel that I was unjustly trash talked the first couple of years with no recourse to give my side of things and I think the results were in my favor (Elliot’s note: keep in mind he hasn’t truly won a championship).

Q: You had such an incredible regular season ending with the #2 seed, what happened in the playoffs?
A: I told you part way through the season when I set the single game record (237 points) that I was retiring because there was no place to go but down. I certainly was right. My team didn’t perform well down the stretch. I do have to say there was a series of waiver moves that were very questionable. For example venus picking up players despite already being out of the playoffs

Q: Did you have a draft strategy going into this year? Were you looking to get any specific players?
A: I did because we are in a superflex league and I drafted late. I was 9th, 10th or 11th I can’t remember. I had a feeling that QBs were going to go early and my strategy was to wait on QBs. Unfortunately I was not smart enough to avoid Jets players and of course drafting Breece Hall didn’t go my way.

Q: What is your favorite part about this league that keeps you coming back to it year after year?
A:Your columns are one of them. They are a lot of fun and you put a lot of effort into them. Fantasy football is made for trash talking and you're very good at that. In every other league I'm in you pay an entry fee and this league is purely bragging rights. When you see your colleagues on Monday or Tuesday, you can dig at their team’s performance that week. I also think it fosters some comradery even amidst the trash talking.

Q: There might be some moving of league managers next year. Who do you think might be a good teacher to add to the WFSFFL?
A: I actually think the league is too big. We added two teams this year and it really hurt waivers. There wasn't a big supply of players available. But with that in mind, I want to see the new crop to see who could be in.

Q: Who do you think should take over writing about this league next year?
A: That's a really good question. *really thinks about this* I don’t think he knows anything about football but it would be funny to have Johnny do it.

Now, for the results...

Note from Mrs. Thaler:
Elliot, on behalf of all us who have participated in the WFSFFL, thank you for your consistent coverage, your humor, your jabs and insults, and for making this so much fun for all of us. With no money or prizes on the line, the bragging rights and WiNK articles make us all competitive (most of us, at least!) and invested. We will miss your articles next year, and you’ll always be the OG of WFSFFL WiNK coverage - thank you!
