The Equity and Justice Center (EJC), led by Mrs. Bazemore, is breaking new ground by launching a Middle School unit, inviting 7th and 8th graders to join the action for a more inclusive school, strengthening bonds between not only just grade levels but our entire Wooster community. Traditionally a space for high school students, the EJC is now widening its horizons to younger voices, offering them the opportunity to develop leadership skills while also making a difference with their fresh perspectives. The new committee’s marketing message asks, "Are you interested in making a difference in our Middle School while learning key leadership skills?" With this invitation, the EJC was seeking six Upper Middle School students ready to collaborate with Senior Prefects and peers to design engaging events and impactful projects. The goal is to celebrate diversity and foster a sense of belonging for all students.
A driving theme behind this developing initiative is promoting inclusion and kindness. Middle School can be a time when social cliques form, and some students may begin to feel left out. The Middle School EJC aims to address this by empowering students to create new ways for their peers to connect, support one another, and address real-life issues they face daily. Following our first meeting, filled with brainstorming, eighth grader Cecelia Newman shared her excitement about the new program, saying, "I jumped at the chance to be a part of the Middle School EJC committee because I think it's a great opportunity for middle school kids to get exposure to such significant topics." Having exposure truly is so important from an early age, and young voices are consistently valued, offering new ideas and inspiration.
By welcoming new perspectives from younger students, the EJC hopes to inspire school-wide involvement and cultivate future leaders. This initiative promises to bring innovative solutions and meaningful change to the Middle School experience, making it a place where every student feels valued and included. As the EJC expands its reach, we challenge Middle School students to step up, share their voices, and help shape a stronger, more connected community. I’m so lucky to have the opportunity to be a helping hand through this new project, and I look forward to seeing the impact these students are going to make on both Wooster, as well as the world.
