Super Bowl Preview: 49ers vs. Chiefs

Super Bowl Preview: 49ers vs. Chiefs
Teddy Porter, '25

Super Bowl LVIII (aka 58) is being played on Sunday, February 11, at 6:30 PM eastern standard time. The Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers are ready to play in the biggest game of the season. The Super Bowl halftime show is being performed by Usher.
This is not their first meeting in the big game. The Chiefs and the 49ers played in the Super Bowl just four years ago and the Chiefs came out victorious in a 31-20 battle. The Chiefs started off down 20-10, but with a little magic from Patick Mahomes, he was able to come back and get his first Super Bowl win. The teams have changed a lot since this Super Bowl though. Kansas City has a horrible receiving core, but a much stronger defense and the 49ers have a new starting quarterback, Brock Purdy, who has been playing extremely well and they have a lot of new pieces on their offense and defense. This should be a good game because both of these teams have electric offenses. Although the 49ers are the favorites to win the Super Bowl, what we have learned all year and all of Patrick Mahomes’ career is to never count him out.
The Kansas City Chiefs in the beginning of the season looked like they were having a down year. With receivers who couldn’t make a catch, an injured Travis Kelce, and a Patrick Mahomes that didn’t look like himself, they didn’t look like they would be going back to the Super Bowl. Although they won many games in the regular season, they never showed any signs of greatness like some other teams in the AFC. Although they looked different, the Chiefs still finished with a record of 11-6 and got themselves the #3 seed. During the playoffs, the Chiefs showed that they were Super Bowl ready and beat every team in their way. Patrick Mahomes proved why he is named the best quarterback in the league as he is now playing in his fourth Super Bowl.
The San Francisco 49ers, going into the regular season, were said to be the best team in the league. They have an insane amount of talent on both sides of the ball. The only reason they missed out on the Super Bowl last year was because in the NFC championship, their starting quarterback, Brock Purdy, got injured early on in the game which created a difficult challenge to beat the Philadelphia Eagles. Throughout this whole season, Brock Purdy stayed healthy and performed on a level that nobody expected him to. Until Week 16, Brock Purdy was one of the front runners for MVP, which shows how much value he has on the 49ers offense. Throughout the whole season the 49ers were favorites in pretty much every game they played in. They finished with a record of 12-5, giving themselves the #1 seed in the NFC. Throughout all of the playoffs they were favored to make the Super Bowl and they ended up beating every team in their way making them go to the biggest game of the year.
My prediction for the Super Bowl is that the San Francisco 49ers will be victorious over the Kansas City Chiefs. I think overall the 49ers have a stronger team and they have more drive for revenge after losing to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl four years ago. One thing that should be nerve racking for 49ers fans is that this is Brock Purdy’s first time ever making the Super Bowl and no one knows how he will perform under the pressure. We know that Patrick Mahomes knows how to play in these big games so that can be a key factor in who wins this game. Although Brock Purdy has all of this pressure, I believe that he will outplay it and play like his life depends on the game.
