On Wednesday, September 14, Wooster Boys Varsity Soccer traveled to Trinity Pawling to play their first game of the season. The team’s first game got canceled due to the storm last Saturday so it was our first challenge of the season. As the game started, we realized that the game was going to be a good one because of how aggressive Trinity Pawling was right off the bat. Every pass we would make, there would always be one player from the opposing team already on the ball. We had to adapt to this pace of soccer if we wanted to win. For the first 20 minutes of the game, there were many chances from both teams, but neither team was able to score off of the created chances until junior Brayan Tenesaca had the ball at his feet. Brayan dribbled through the midfield and played a through ball to senior captain Peyton Mancini. The pass was perfect, giving Peyton enough time to dribble around the keeper and shoot the ball in the back of the net, putting Wooster up 1-0. For the last 20 minutes of the half we decided to play more calm and defensive so that we could maintain our lead. We were able to do this for most of the half until about two minutes left to go in the first half. Trinity Pawling was able to dribble down the right side of the field and then play a cross to the striker who would then score, their first goal making it 1-1. This ended the half, but we ended the first half with our heads high because we knew we were playing well for our first game.
When the second half started it didn’t take too long for Trinity Pawling to score their second goal. They received a corner kick which resulted in them scoring a header to put them up 2-1. Later on in the second half, a similar situation happened. They got another corner kick and were able to score another goal off of it. They were up 3-1, but we knew we couldn’t give up. With about 20 minutes left to go in the game, Brayan again dribbled through many defenders and before he could shoot he got fouled. He won Wooster a penalty kick that would put us back into the game if we scored it. When Brayan took the penalty shot, he shot it right down the middle, which deflected off of the goalkeeper's feet. Peyton was able to track the ball and shoot it right into the net making the score 3-2. As time was running out, we tried and tried to score, but we weren’t able to. With about 5 minutes left in the game Trinity Pawling was able to score again, ending the game with a score of 4-2. Although this was a tough loss for Wooster Boys Soccer, we know we will come back stronger than ever.
