After a huge win, Coach Fischer kept his promise to the team and shaved his head to celebrate the first state championship for Wooster Ultimate Frisbee.
At the beginning of the season, Coach Fischer promised Will Micciche that if the trophy came home, his hair would come off. Throughout the season, with the team’s development, hopes for Fischer’s buzzcut grew. We faced these teams multiple times, the team was confident in winning states.
This weekend, the Wooster Ultimate team traveled to Hotchkiss School to compete in the CT Ultimate State Tournament. They beat three different schools and advanced to the final. They handily won the final 11-4, beating a tough Xavier team—a perfect ending to a revenge tour season after a disappointing end to a Cinderella story last year. Last season, the boys made it to the finals with zero subs. Suffering fatigue, the team came out short at the end to the Middletown Fire Starters (who they beat along the way to their final this year.)
This year, following the Championship, the antsy Ultimate team waited patiently for 4:00 pm on Monday, awaiting the buzz cut. Coach Fischer arrived with a pair of clippers, already having accepted his fate. Every player took turns using the clippers on the coach’s hair - first the captains, then seniors, then juniors and so on. When the dust settled, he was left with a premium buzz cut to show off at the Wooster Sports Awards; a perfect way to end a storybook season. See a "clip" of it here!
