Welcome From Matt Byrnes

Welcome From Matt Byrnes

Dear Wooster Alumni Community,

I am excited to welcome you to our new Alumni E-Newsletter. One of our goals in creating this newsletter in this particular format is to create yet another channel of communication between Wooster School alumni and the school itself. Our vision is that alumni and their stories will drive the narrative of the newsletters while also providing us with the opportunity to share more of the good news that is happening at Wooster every day. In this way, we hope to strengthen the bonds which connect today’s students and families with those who have come before.

One of the great paradoxes facing schools and their alumni is how change is inevitable, and always central to every school narrative, and yet often the thing which makes the maintenance of the long-term relationship difficult. Ironically, the greatest success stories of our graduates are always based upon change, how each person who leaves the school builds on the foundational ethos of the school and uses it to create, and change, the narrative of their own lives. In the case of Wooster graduates, this also often includes changing the lives of others for the better. Hopefully, through this newsletter, we can bring the stories of how our graduates have built upon their Wooster foundations and made positive changes for themselves and others, while also telling the stories of how we continue to build upon those same foundations with today’s Wooster community. Inevitably, we know that we will find, and celebrate, the goodness that is rooted in and emanates from our motto, our School Prayer, and from the nearly 100 years of relationship and community-based learning that continues through to this day at Wooster School.

Thank you so much for reading, sharing your stories, and for your support through the years.

Be well,

Matt Byrnes
Head of School

In 1969, Wooster School announced to its community that after more than 40 years as an all-boys school, it would become co-educational; and then in July 1970, it was official, as Wooster advertised in local newspapers: “Wooster’s 45th year as a college preparatory school this September will include an expanded day student division for both boys and girls.”

As college application deadlines approach in early November, the entire Wooster School community rallies around our graduating senior class. Beyond mere encouragement and well wishes, however, the entire school – from classroom teachers, to coaches, to support staff and administrators – shifts its attention and workflow for one entire day to contribute to a workshop designed to help seniors put the finishing touches on their college admission materials.

Homecoming 2023 Recap

On Saturday, October 14, 2023, Wooster School welcomed back dozens of Generals from the past. Class representatives spanned from our most recent Alumni who just graduated in 2023, to those who crossed the stage to accept their diplomas in 1961. A true testament to the day was that there was multiple alumnus from every decade in between.
