Message From Matt Byrnes

Dear Wooster Alumni Community,

If, like me, you are feeling a bit unmoored by evolution of culture and society these last few years and in search of consistency of belief and action in a world of relativism, inconstancy, and let’s be honest, dishonesty, then I offer Wooster School as a place upon which you can still rely.

Here at Wooster School, we are still doing our best to partner with families on creating young adults who aspire to be gentle, generous, truthful, kind, and brave. Yes, we’ve had to adjust to the world around us to design ways to keep our focus on our mission, but the vast majority of current Wooster families and students still continue to believe that this is the most important thing that we can do for their children. And we have found ways to continue the work within frameworks which are familiar to all of you – through Jobs, Chapel, Advisory, Athletics, Music, Theater, Art, and Academics.

Not surprisingly, we continue to see the children and grandchildren of Wooster alumni enrolling because their parents share our goals and still see the foundational missions and ethos which were so important to them in years past. We've also expanded our reach into neighboring towns while continuing to serve our hometown of Danbury like never before. As always, our hope is that by continuing to graduate young people in search of purpose in their own lives, and the “good” that we know humans can achieve when they treat each other with respect and kindness, we can contribute in our own, small Wooster Way to changing the world for the better. So if you are in need of some firmer footing at any time, you can feel good about planting your feet back on the good earth of your Wooster School experience.

I wish you the best of summer and encourage you to visit us, whether for Homecoming this fall or when you find yourself back in the neighborhood.

Be well,

Matt Byrnes
Head of School

On Friday, June 13, Wooster welcomed 59 new alumni – the members of the Class of 2025. The scene was a familiar one: the crowd gathered under the tent on Coburn Lawn, the faculty and staff, followed by the seniors, headed out of the Chapel, where they held their last gathering in the Quaker meeting, and processed to the bagpipes down the sidewalk and into the tent.

The Archives Team just wrapped up its first full year and accomplished a lot—from organizing Homecoming and presenting in Chapel to digitizing historical materials and uncovering treasures in the Chapel attic. We’ve preserved Wooster’s history, engaged the community, and are excited to return next year with even more energy. Thank you for your support—see you in the fall!

The Wooster Archivists dug deep into the school's first commencement ceremony and uncovered that Wooster School held its first graduation in 1929, three years after opening. The second followed in 1930, alongside the laying of its chapel cornerstone and the release of its first yearbook. From those early beginnings, Wooster has continued to grow and thrive.
