On Friday, June 7, Wooster commemorated the Graduation of the Class of 2024. Fifty-one proud members of the class donned their maroon caps and gowns, crossing the stage to receive their diplomas and ceremoniously turn their tassels - just as you all did as well.
One of the most cherished traditions of Wooster’s Commencement is the Quaker Service that takes place in the Chapel just before the Graduation ceremony begins. During this solemn gathering, seniors, faculty, and staff come together to share their feelings, thoughts, and reflections on their shared journey at Wooster. This year was no different, as there were plenty of tears and sentimental words of gratitude shared from both sides of the aisle.
Afterwards, the doors opened to a beautiful, sunny day, and the bagpipes played while the seniors processed under the tent to the cheers of family and friends. They joined Head of School Matt Byrnes P '17, '19, '24 (also Alex’s dad), President of the Board of Trustees Allen Purkiss P '21, '23, '25, and Director of Divisions Dr. Diane Martin on stage.
The ceremony proceeded with speeches from Matt Byrnes and Allen Purkiss, but also from Class Orator Joey Cerulli. A very special moment also came when outgoing board members Neil Marcus '65, and Carroll Brewster were recognized by Matt Byrnes for their years of service. Carroll was unable to attend but was acknowledged for his 26 years on the Board. Neil, who was accompanied by his wife Lisi and brother Michael '61, began his tenure as Trustee back in 1981. Neil spoke to the audience and shared an earmarked quote from the Bible that was given to him by John Verdery upon his graduation 59 years ago. Mr. Marcus encouraged the Class of 2024 to stay engaged because of the difference he believes they can continue to make at Wooster.
As alumni, you might recognize some of the names of this year's graduates, whether you knew them when they were younger or are familiar with their parents or family members who are or were either employees or alumni themselves. This interconnectedness within the Wooster community adds a special depth to the bond shared among alumni, current students, and faculty.
Ten of this year's graduates began their journey at Wooster in Lower School, with one joining in Pre-K. That's Jack Zahner, the son of John “Mr. Z” and Nora Zahner, whose connection to the Wooster community predates his birth. The Zahner family relocated to Wooster's campus in 2003, with daughter Michaela '20, and soon to be joined by Evie '22. While Mr. Z taught in Wooster’s Lower School, Nora played a pivotal role in running Summer at Wooster. After more than 20 years of involvement, Jack stands as the last Zahner to depart from Wooster’s campus, marking the end of an era for the family and for Wooster.
Alexa Dominguez, who began her journey at Wooster in Kindergarten, has now graduated as part of the Class of '24. Notably, both of Alexa's parents, Noel and Leticia, contributed their dedicated service to Wooster for many years, with Noel working on the maintenance crew and Leticia in the kitchen. In addition, Alexa's sister Karelin and brother-in-law Mark Toledo also graduated from Wooster in 2019, adding to the family's proud legacy.
You may remember Matt Honeycutt from the Advancement Office. His daughter Ava, who became a part of the Wooster community in 1st grade, has also graduated. She now joins her brother Ben, who graduated in 2021, as a proud alum of Wooster School.
After 11 years as a Wooster parent, when Mr. Byrnes handed Alex their diploma, it marked the end of an era. Alex, who became a part of the Wooster family in 2nd grade, now joins their brothers Kern '17 and Cooper '19 in the Alumni group. With Alex's graduation, the tradition of Alex, Brooks, Cooper, and Kern making the long walk to school each day from the Head’s residence comes to a close.
Mrs. Thaler is another faculty member transitioning from being a faculty parent. Will, who joined in 4th grade, stood among the graduates. Will became the last of the Thaler children to pass through Wooster, and the second to graduate, after brother Max in 2021.
Long time art teachers Ms. Carlson and Ms. Acheson were proud parents at Graduation, as Amelia Vail and Max Rand wrapped up their time at Wooster. Both teachers will continue their roles as Wooster parents for a few more years, with Upper School students in the upcoming school year. Amelia is also the granddaughter of Richard (Dick) Vail '62.
Joey Cerulli, the Graduation Speaker, who came to Wooster in 7th grade, now joins his sister Angelina '22 as an alum, continuing the family legacy at Wooster. Notably, he follows in the footsteps of two of his uncles: John Canning '88 and Rob Fornshell '76. Additionally, Joey's family connection extends even deeper as Rob’s wife, Antoinette, also served at Wooster, working in the Lower School during the 1990s and returning for a period from 2018 to 2020.
Andalyn Bordoy became a part of the Wooster community as a junior, following in the footsteps of her brother Gabe, who graduated in 2022. Throughout her time at Wooster, Andi has received enthusiastic support during her soccer, basketball, and lacrosse games, notably from her uncle Sam Levitt '95. Not only does Sam cheer Andi on, but he also contributes to the vibrant atmosphere of Wooster gatherings by playing the organ at many events.
Congratulations to all of our graduates! Please join us in extending a warm welcome to them as they join you in this group of Wooster School Alumni. We celebrate their achievements and eagerly anticipate the positive impact they will make in the world. Once a General, Always a General!
