Have you ever wished you could experience summer camp through the eyes of a kid just one more time? Now you can with WiNK Summer! WiNK Summer is run by Wooster's very own Brooke Thaler. Brooke attended Dickinson College where she majored in American studies with a focus in mass media. She also played varsity field hockey and lacrosse all four years and is in the sports hall of fame at Dickinson. She used to be a tv news reporter as well as write for Ridgefield magazine. Brooke now teaches journalism in Wooster's Upper School and is charge of WiNK. During the school year, Wooster students post weekly about the different kinds of things going on at Wooster. Students post things such as stories, features, quizzes, videos, and more. The projects then get sent out for students, faculty, and parents to see. Brooke also runs the school yearbook and coaches girls varsity lacrosse and middle school girls basketball.
We asked Brooke what exactly WiNK Summer is. She remarked, "WiNK Summer is a fun, interactive, hands on journalism class with video, reporting, interviewing, writing, and photography, that posts weekly to keep students, faculty, and parents updated on what is going on at Summer at Wooster!" Brooke also went on to tell us that, as a parent of three, she loves to know what her kids are up to and WiNK Summer is a perfect way to keep people in the loop. She went on to say that WiNK Summer is a condensed version of WiNK during the school year having only four days to make projects. WiNK Summer is a little more fun and finds projects where everyone can contribute like music videos, movie trailers, animal watches, articles, interviews, and more. Brooke's main goal with WiNK Summer is not only to introduce kids to media, but to use it as a way to boost their confidence and explore creativity. She talked about how speaking with other people for interviews, talking on camera, and working together in teams are all ways to help the kids become more self-confidant. Brooke's goal is to make sure the kids are staying active and involved while also having fun and gaining new interests. WiNK Summer is offered every single session this summer so make sure to stay updated by visiting http://www.woosterschool.org/winksummer.
