The Wooster School boys and girls basketball regular season has come to an end and now it is time for the teams to focus on the postseason. Housatonic Valley Athletic League (HVAL) tournaments will be taking place next week with the prestigious New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) tournaments set to begin on March 1.
The boys basketball team boasts a 16-2 overall record and went undefeated in HVAL contests with a 14-0 record. The team has secured the #1 seed in the HVAL tournament and will host a first round game on Tuesday, February 21, semifinals will be held on Thursday, February 23, with the championship game set for Saturday, February 25.
Senior captains Alex Foote (Bedford Hills, NY), Sam Cox (Redding, CT), and Kern Byrnes (Ridgefield, CT) were team leaders both on and off the court. Alex Foote has a team high average of 14 points per game along with an average of 7 rebounds, Kern Byrnes leads the team average of 11 rebounds per game along with 9 points per game, and Sam Cox contributed an average of 10 rebounds and 7 points per game.
"Stemming from the momentum of last year's success, hopes were high as the boys entered into the 2016-17 season. Despite a 2-2 record out of conference play, Wooster had an incredible run during the regular season. We are excited to be the #1 seed for the conference tournament as it reflects the competitiveness and cohesion as a team the boys showed all season long," remarked Head Coach David Newman.
The girls team wrapped up the regular season with an overall record of 13-3 and 9-1 in HVAL play. They have also secured the #1 seed in the HVAL tournament. They will receive a first round bye and then host a semifinal game on Thursday, February 23, with the championship game set for Saturday, February 25.
Senior Venus Okwuka (Brookfield, CT) led the team in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots for the third consecutive season. Additionally, senior Sarah Fried (Redding, CT) has been a very consistent player all season long, her work on the defensive side of the ball has been stellar.
"Knowing that we were going to be a team of returning veteran players, we've been looking forward to the HVAL tournament since opening day," said Head Coach Dave MacNutt. "While we've been a bit inconsistent at times this season, I think that we've played our best basketball of the season down the final stretch ... which is where you want your team be. If we play to the best of our ability, I really like our chances going forward."
Good luck Generals as they embark upon the postseason!
