Wooster's Upper School academic program, grounded in the liberal arts, continues to demand much of its students.
"Wooster insisted that we would not be allowed to lead unexamined lives. Whether we were working to solve a problem in mathematics, write an essay, or think through a difficult moral dilemma, we knew we would have to do so in a community that would care about how and why we had proceeded from point A to point B..."

- Neil L. Rudenstine, '52

This is the time when academic excellence can be recognized through independent study, honors courses, and Advanced Placement courses. This is also a time when students take on increasing levels of responsibility as they build toward the leadership responsibilities of their senior year. In addition to academics, however, Upper School students must plan their future, and make meaningful contributions to the School and the community at large. Many sophomores study abroad in France or Spain for a semester or a year. Most seniors take advantage of the Senior Independent Study (SIS), which allows them to work off-campus for the final five weeks of the school year. Colloquiums offer seniors an opportunity to polish public speaking skills and present a research topic of choice to their peers.
